J-Shine & English for Teaching Younger Learners

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This 6 week full-time course is accredited by J-Shine and NEAS.  It prepares participants to teach English to children.  Graduates of the IH Sydney J-Shine course qualify to work as Assistant English Language Teachers in Japanese Government Primary Schools.  Graduates may also choose to teach English in private language schools and pre-schools throughout Japan.

The J-Shine course is available to native Japanese speakers who have an Intermediate English level.  It will develop the English language skills of the student and introduce teaching methodology and activities for teaching younger learners.  Micro teaching and observation are also key aspects of this course.  Participants can also gain real teaching experience through optional work experience programmes in accredited pre-schools in Sydney and primary schools in Tokyo or Osaka.

Certificate is issued by IH Sydney - Teacher Training Centre and J-Shine.

COURSE CONTENT

Content includes:

  • language development lessons – speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation
  • workshops on teaching methodology for children
  • practice making lesson plans
  • demonstrations of classroom management
  • presentations and practice using songs, making masks, teaching games and other activities
  • “teacher language” lessons
  • practice teaching with your colleagues
  • seminars on the Japanese primary school curriculum
  • observation at state primary schools in conjunction with the NSW Department of Education
  • work experience as a teacher’s assistant in a Sydney pre-school
  • optional volunteer programme in primary schools in Tokyo and Osaka.

WEEKS 1 TO 4

The first 4 weeks of the course focus on teaching methodology, activities for the classroom (songs, games, chants, story telling and craft activities), lesson planning, peer teaching, observation and the Japanese primary school curriculum.  In addition each week will focus on a key language skill (speaking, listening, reading, writing) to develop the students own accuracy and confidence to use English in the classroom.

WEEKS 5 & 6

These 2 weeks are conducted as work experience in an accredited pre-school in Sydney.  Students are given the opportunity to put the teaching methodology into practice with the children at the centre.  They will be involved in all activities at the centre from keeping a clean and tidy environment to running activities in the classroom. 

WEEK 7 - OPTIONAL

International House Sydney – Teacher Training Centre students also have the truly unique opportunity to participate in volunteer teaching programmes in government primary schools in Tokyo and Osaka.  Upon completion of the 6 week J-Shine course students can work as Assistant Language Teachers in the real classroom to gain even greater confidence and understanding by working alongside qualified Japanese primary teachers.  The volunteer programme is optional and is 1 weeks in duration.

ASSESSMENT

There is no final examination. 

You will be assessed on your:

  • overall performance in classroom activities
  • teaching practice 
  • presentations.

ENTRY CRITERIA

  • intermediate level of English
  • at least 18 years of age.

COURSE LENGTH

  • six weeks full-time, includes:
    four weeks classtime (23 hours per week), and
    two weeks experience (min. 25 hours per week).

VISAS

Visas for non Australian passport holders include:

  • visitors visa
  • working holiday visa
  • student visa (ELICOS).

TRAINERS

All of our trainers are:

  • accredited by the University of Cambridge
  • post-graduate industry qualified
  • experienced teacher trainers with an average of 12 years experience.

APPLY FOR THIS COURSE

INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH LEVEL SPEAKERS can apply in one of three ways:

1) Direct entry with an official *English level test score of:

  • General IELTS 4.5 or Academic IELTS 4.0 in all skills
  • TOEIC 500 – 600
  • TOEFL PBT 400, TOEFL CBT 97, TOEFL IBT 32
  • Cambridge PET, or
  • JETP/EIKEN 2.

Please present the following to IH Sydney – Teacher Training Centre

  • original copy of English level test score
  • section A of the application form
  • signed terms and conditions and indemnity and release.

2) Without an official English level test scoreIf you are applying in Sydney – please send the following to register for the *in-school English level test:

  • section A of the application form
  • signed terms and conditions and indemnity and release.

*In-school English level tests are held every Monday and Wednesday at 2pm at Level 3, 89 York Street, Sydney.

3) Without an official English level test scoreIf you are applying from outside Sydney – please complete the following:

  • section A of the application form
  • section B of the application form - assessment questions 2 & 3
  • signed terms and conditions and indemnity and release.

Students will also be required to complete a short telephone speaking test.

Full payment of course fees are required to secure your position on the course.
