Teaching Younger Learners (Distance Ed)

INFORMATION SESSIONS

The professional development range of courses offered by IH Sydney - Teacher Training Centre is designed for teachers who want to develop specialist skills.  Each module contains commentaries to offer background information on TESOL methodology, solutions to problems, activities and practical ideas to use in the classroom.  Delivered by distance learning trainees can study in their own time and at their own pace, anywhere in the world.

Teaching Younger Learners (YLs) is designed for TESOL graduates and ELT teachers who want to further develop their professional skills to teach English to children aged 4 to 12 years old. Many graduates from CELTA or Certificate IV in TESOL find themselves overseas teaching English to younger learners without any specific younger learner training. This programme is designed to develop the skills and knowledge required to deliver better lessons to this age group.

Learning outcomes

You will build upon your existing knowledge of teaching ESL/EFL and learn how to adapt your skills to the younger learners (YLs) classroom.  You will learn how to:

• make the classroom fun and challenging for YLs
• gain confidence and control in the YLs classroom
• introduce practical learning activities for YLs.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Certification is issued by IH Sydney – Teacher Training Centre upon successful course completion.

CERTIFICATION & RECOGNITION

Ten modules:

• Teaching English to young & very young learners
• Classroom management
• Planning for YLs
• Materials
• Speaking and listening skills
• Reading and writing skills
• Clarifying language  
• Different approaches to teaching YLs
• Using games in the YLs classroom 
• Dealing with mixed ability classes

COURSE CONTENT

Assessment in the form of a written examination is incorporated in the programme and must be successfully completed to qualify for certification.

ENTRY CRITERIA

• 20 hours of guided distance learning 
• final examination.

CLASS SIZE

This course is not available for student visa holders

Teaching YLs has been developed by members of the IH Sydney - Teacher Training academic staff.  All of our trainers are:

• accredited by the University of Cambridge
• post-graduate industry qualified
• experienced teaching English in many countries overseas
• experienced teacher trainers with an average of 12 years experience.
