Accredited by VETAB (NSW Government Vocational Educational and Training Accreditation Board) this Certificate IV in TESOL course has been developed by International House to mirror the syllabus of the famous University of Cambridge CELTA course.  It is a highly practical course which introduces you to current teaching methods, practical teaching ideas and a range of TESOL resources.  A major component of the course is your teaching practicum.

International House Sydney - Teacher Training and Professional Centre now offers a blended learning programme for greater flexibility in course delivery. The qualification is gained by completing the following three steps:

  1. Part 1: Minimum 60 hour interactive on line TESOL methodology component
  2. Part 2: 1 week (30 hour) face to face learning component at our centre in Sydney including 1 hour of assessed teaching practice with  real students and further TESOL methodology
  3. Part 3: a final phase completing 5 hours of observed and assessed teaching practice at our training centre in Sydney plus tutor consultation before and after teaching - (minimum 10 hours)

After successful completion of each stage a Certificate IV in TESOL statement of attainment are available to the course participant.

Designed for:

Native English speakers and non-native (pre-advanced and above) who want to enter the English language teaching profession.  It is also suitable for experienced teachers who want to further develop their communicative teaching skills through the strong focus on practical teaching. This course is not available for students on student visas.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course is accredited by the Vocational and Educational Training Accreditation Baord (VETAB) NSW colleges in Australia and has a growing international recognition.

The certificate is part of the Australian Qualifications Framework and meets the standards of NEAS, the National ELT Accreditation Scheme for entry level into accredited English language colleges. Certification is issued by International House Sydney – Teacher Training Centre upon successful completion of the course.  Trainees who complete part of the programme will be issued with a statement of attainment outlining the competencies that they achieved.

Certificate IV in TESOL is gaining great crediibility internationally as a quality entry level TESOL qualification.

Study pathways

Many universities in Australia will offer holders of Certificate IV in TESOL credit towards study in TESOL related degree programmes. For example, graduates of the Certificate IV in TESOL can gain one subject credit towards further TESOL studies at the University of Canberra. Candidates must apply separately to the university.

COURSE CONTENT

  • You will be required to complete six hours of assessed teaching practice, which is conducted with real classes.
  • You will also complete assessed written assignments and online tasks.
  • There is no final examination.

ASSESSMENT

  • All candidates must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Not available for students on student visas
  • You are not required to have previous teaching experience or the ability to speak a second language.

ENTRY CRITERIA

A minimum of 100 hours of tuition content is included over the three component parts:

Part 1: The online component is flexible and will allow you to work at your own pace. There are 8 units of study and we recommend that course participants aim to complete one unit per week. A minimum of 60 hours course time is expected.

Part 2:  Duration is one week (30 hours) from Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm

Part 3:  This part involves 5 hours of teaching practice with real students and can be arranged independently with IH Sydney. There are available teaching practice one hour slots available from 11.00am to 1.00pm daily at our CBD campus - (bookings at least 2 weeks in advance). There will be a minumum of 5 further hours of tutor consultation surrounding the classroom teaching time.
There is also further observation of qualified teachers.

COURSE LENGTH

Part 1: (online component - 60 hours minimum) This will involve working together with up to 12 trainees on the online module and one tutor.

Part 2: (1 week component - 30 hours) This will have a maximum class size of 12 trainees to one tutor.

Part 3: This component is effectively one to one tuition  - You will be organising your teaching practice hours (5 hours of observed and assessed teaching practice) with your tutor and receiving preparation prior and feedback after each lesson taught. (minimum 5 hours)

All of our trainers are:

  • accredited by the University of Cambridge
  • holders of the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
  • post-graduate industry qualified
  • experienced teacher trainers with an average of 10 years experience.

  • signed terms and conditions and indemnity and release

 on the online application form and submit. You can begin your Certificate IV inTESOL course straight away.
